Non-Magnetic Properties of AMPCO® Alloys
Non-Magnetic Properties of AMPCO® Alloys
All AMPCO® alloys have a magnetic permeability below 2 µ (mu), which is the threshold below which a material is considered non-magnetic. This property is relevant in several demanding application contexts.
In environments with strong magnetic fields, non-magnetic tooling eliminates the risk of components being attracted to magnetic sources, which could cause injury or equipment damage. In areas near sensitive electrical measuring equipment, non-magnetic materials avoid interference with measurement accuracy.
A particularly well-documented application is in tube welding lines for stainless steel and mild steel tubes, where high-frequency current is used at the welding station. Pressure rolls made from magnetic tool steel will heat up rapidly in this environment, reaching red heat within minutes. AMPCO® 25 non-magnetic pressure rolls remain relatively cool under the same conditions, allowing standard cooling lubricant to be used and enabling continuous operation.
