Deep Drawing of Pure Aluminum with AMPCO® Alloys

Key Considerations, Risks, and Recommended Grade for Thin-Section Dies

Using AMPCO® alloys for deep drawing of 99.5% pure aluminum requires careful consideration. Because AMPCO® aluminum bronzes contain aluminum in their composition, sliding aluminum against aluminum can generate friction and potential adhesion issues. However, a number of customers have used AMPCO® alloys for this application with good results. Success depends on several factors including lubrication quality, the condition and surface quality of the aluminum sheet, and process parameters.

For dies with thin sections of 5 mm or less, AMPCO® 18 is the recommended grade. Harder grades such as AMPCO® 22 and AMPCO® 25, which are typically associated with deep drawing applications, carry a risk of cracking at such thin sections due to their lower elongation values. AMPCO® 18 is sufficiently strong for pure aluminum sheet, and its lower aluminum content compared to the harder grades also reduces the risk of adhesion issues. Trials are recommended before committing to full production.
