AMPCOLOY® 97 and AMPCOLOY® 99: Composition, Status, and Applications

Understanding Two Legacy Resistance Welding Alloys and Their Modern Equivalents

AMPCOLOY® 97 is a copper-chrome (CuCr) alloy classified as RWMA Class 2. It has largely been replaced by AMPCOLOY® 972, a copper-chrome-zirconium (CuCrZr) alloy also in RWMA Class 2, which offers improved performance. AMPCOLOY® 97 can still be produced on request, with 50.8 mm diameter available in stock in Woerden.

AMPCOLOY® 99 is a copper-cadmium (CuCd) alloy classified as RWMA Class 1. It remains in use in the United States but is no longer used in European markets due to RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) regulations prohibiting the use of cadmium. AMPCOLOY® 99 is available through AMPCO METAL in the USA.

Both alloys are used in resistance welding applications corresponding to their respective RWMA classifications.
